Josh Shapiro and Stacy Garrity have outlined their positions on health care, abortion, and trans rights ahead of the 2026 Pennsylvania election. Their stances will play a significant role in shaping the political landscape of Pennsylvania in the upcoming election.

The Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court ruled 4-3 that the state's ban on using Medicaid and other public funds for abortion care violates the Pennsylvania Constitution's Equal Rights Amendment. Governor Josh Shapiro supported the decision, emphasizing that access to reproductive care should not depend on income.

Abortion remains legal in Pennsylvania up to 24 weeks, but upcoming elections in 2025 and 2026 could shift the balance of power in the state legislature and governorship, potentially enabling anti-abortion activists to pass restrictive laws or pursue a constitutional amendment to ban abortion. Currently, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court protects abortion rights under the state constitution's Equal Rights Amendment, but a Republican-controlled legislature and governor could challenge this precedent, making the 2026 elections critical for abortion access in Pennsylvania.
